IMPACT OF LARGE MOLTEN METAL SPLASHES
The EN ISO 9185 standard specifies a test method to evaluate heat penetration resistance for materials allocated for use in items of clothing for protection against large splashes of molten metal. It provides specific procedures to evaluate the effects of splashes of molten aluminium, molten cryolite, molten copper, molten iron and molten mild steel. The main test method can be applied to a wider range of hot molten materials than just the materials for which there are specific procedures established whenever the appropriate measures are taken to protect the operator from the test.
EN ISO 9185 TEST METHOD CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
EN ISO 9185: Evaluation of the resistance of the materials to molten metal splashes.
For each material or group of materials, 7 samples will be prepared in the warp direction (except for leather) measuring 260 mm x 100 mm.
That same is done with a sheet of PVC (faux leather).
First, the cut PVC sample is placed and then the fabric sample to be tested is placed on top of it. Different quantities of molten metal are poured over the fabric sample, which has been placed at a certain angle depending on the metal used, and the damage caused to the fabric and the sheet of PVC is evaluated. Other metals, such as copper, tempered steel and cryolite have been subjected to standardisation.
